Early computing, especially early gaming is generally thought of as being the domain of men. This is actually untrue, there were woman at the forefront of the gaming industry from the very beginning. In fact one of the earliest game companies (Sierra On-Line) was co-founded by a woman.
Roberta Williams
By the late 1970s Roberta Williams was a fan of computer games. She'd played a number of text based adventures but thought she could do better. She thought up a design and presented a proposal to her husband. He had the technical knowledge to help her realise her vision.
The game was a success as were their next two games.
The company they founded was Sierra On-Line, an early games developer, known for pioneering graphic adventure games as well as having a string of hits. Roberta created the original King's Quest which not only spawned a series but also the Police Quest and Space Quest series. By modern standards, these games aren't spectacular but in their day, they were extremely innovative and became cult classics.
Sierra On-Line went on to employ two other leading female game designers:
Jane Jensen
Whereas Roberta initially had no computer experience besides playing games, Jane Jensen had a computer science degree. She also enjoyed creative writing. This would have made her an attractive proposition and as a result she was hired by Sierra On-Line where she worked on a number of projects before she designed her first solo project. Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers was a huge success and spawned a number of sequels.
Jane has also co-founded two computer game companies.
Lorelei Shannon
One of the other female game designers to work at Sierra On-Line was Lorelei Shannon. Not only did Lorelei work on a number of game series (including Police Quest), she's also written a number of books.
